Collaborative Leadership Facilitator Skills Training Program: Working Across the Divides

The Opportunity!

Up to 20 people will be chosen through an application process to learn and implement facilitation and leadership strategies in the following skills:

  • Group Problem Solving
  • Creating Inclusive and Safe Spaces
  • Participatory Decision Making and Consensus Building
  • Designing Meeting Agenda and Process
  • Engaging Conflict
  • Harnessing Group Memory

Expected Commitment of Selected Leaders

Selected individuals commit to take part in all the following activities:

6 scheduled Virtual Training Sessions: Activities in this phase are designed to prepare an individual facilitator to develop the core competencies needed for working across divides in perspective that often result from differences in lived experience and perspective across a variety of intersecting social categories. Each session is 90 minutes and conducted through an Adobe Connect platform with audio and webcam based conferencing. 

Implementation, Communication and Evaluation (6 months): Follow along activities and coaching through the STAR Center to help support the individual’s action plan. This will include some pre-and post training and implementation evaluation activities. Direct coaching from the STAR Center staff and consultants will be available for each participant.

Application Instructions

This is a competitive process in which individuals will be selected based on current readiness, capacity and willingness to actively participate in the initiative as outlined above.

The interested person should complete, scan and submit:

  1. Application form
  2. A completed readiness assessment (see below)

All materials will be kept and stored as confidential information by the STAR Center and will not be shared with anyone other than the STAR Center review team which includes Chacku Mathai and Tanya Ryder.

Send the completed application form no later than Friday, March 3, 2017 by email attachment to Tanya Ryder, Project Manager for the STAR Center at tryder@nami.org.

Review Criteria

The review team will favorably consider applications that:

  • Commit to a six-month effort
  • Agree to engage and actively participate with STAR Center in all activities
  • Offer examples of concrete opportunities to use skills in community
  • Preference will be given to individuals in:
    • Region 2 - New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and
    • Region 6 - Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
